Brake problems

Car:

1987 5000 CS

2.2L Turbo
5 speed manual
Quattro
~187k miles

Problem:

The car recently started displaying the warning light that says BRAKE within a red triangle, complete with three warning beeps. I've checked the brake fluid level, it's fine, made sure the belts are all there, and the brakes are working just as fine as before the light came on. Is there anything I'm missing? And if there is, should I take it to a mechanic or can I do it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

RE: Brake problems

Have you checked the power steering fluid??? The Vaccume boost is supplied by the pump that drives the power steering, I had a similar problem on my 86 CS Turbo Wagon...

check the hydraulic oil level, and it is very possible you need a new bomb. that light beeps when the pressure is not correct in the hydraulic system, meaning brakes could be compromised....

RE: Brake problems

I think this may be the problem, the stick that dips down into the fluid broke off (previous owner) and the computer is probably not getting an accurate reading. And my brakes have been working just as good as when I changed the pads last (before the light was going off) so that makes me think its not the bomb. Unless I wouldn't notice that the bomb is going out. Anyways, I just bought a used cap off of a wrecking yard, I'll install it soon as I can. Thanks for the help guys, hopefully this will work.
