Default Odometer and tripometer??

Neither of these work (Odometer or tripometer), are they gear driven? The speedometer and Tach work fine, are they electronic?

I guess i am asking are they seperately driven?

Oh, also is there a site on the web to help out with older Audi's. Also, is the Bentley Publication the book to buy for someone wanting to fix up an older car?
Have heard that it is mostly for someone with Audi training. Please someone let me know if you would recommend that book, it is kind of expensive..

On the 80/90 models I believe they are electric. For working on older Audi's check out sjmautotechnik.com and go to diagnostic link, there you will find lots of useful information. I think there is some sort of fix for a common speedometer problem. Don't be discouraged that it is mostly for the 5000/200/100 models. Many of the key parts are the same just mounted in a smaller more compact body. The problem could be as easy to fix as pulling the gauge cluster out and disconnecting and reconnecting the connectors.

As for the manual go with Robert Bentley, the others are just not worth the frustration.

Matt,

You might get more info if you said what year and model.

Bentley is more technical, but the major diff would be Bently..."use Tool No. XXXX", Haynes, if they print one for yours, "Use Tool No. XXXX", or "Use this as an alternate." You do not need to be an Audi trained mech, but you do need to have some auto repair expertise.

Cheers,

George

It is a 1988 Audi 90 2.3l.

The speedometer and tach, work great, also the small trip digital display works also. As far as i can tell the odometer, tripometer, and the lights for the instrument panel are the only things not working.

OK, the speedo gets an electronic signal from the speed sensor on the transmission(also called the distance sensor) That moves the needle and powers a motor that advances the trip/odometer by way of a few small gears. The gears are made of oil impregnated rubber and fall apart after time( go figure, oil and rubber don't like each other). Your options are send it to a VDO shop and plan on spending at the very least $100, or do it yourself. There is a man in Virginia thad makes replacement gears. go to

odometer gears ltd.

Most of the time it's the small gear that falls apart. anyway, pull the speedo apart, see what's broken, and give odometergears a call, he's a great guy and will take the time to explain things.

What he said, there is a gear on the shaft that has a tendency to split, losing it's grip on the tripmeter shaft. It will go to.9 miles, stall.

Whether it can be bought, I don't know, no longer have the 2 cars with the prob. Never tried again.

Cheers,

George

Again,
odometergears

I have repaired my odometer/trip meter thanks to this man.

He makes the gears you need for your VDO Speedo
