What to do with an old 5000 CS?
I have an old 5000 CS sitting on my lawn. It dropped an exhaust valve 8 or 10 years ago. I had a spare engine that I was working on, but ran out of money and couldn't finish. Now I'm not sure what to do with it.
I thought about parting it out on ebay, or maybe finding someone that wants to whole thing to either fix up or use as a parts donor to get another one working. Occasionally, I've even entertained ideas of swapping the head from the good motor, after fishing out the stray valve, of course. Any ideas? |
If it dropped a valve, it has damaged the piston. You'll have to pull the engine to fix it. I found rings and a few other things on Partsgeek.com for great prices.
I'm in the process of rebuilding the 2.3L in my 87 5000SQ and have about $400 in it. I need to do the head next. Going to replace the guides and tappets. That'll cost me another $200... But the thing lasted 287K miles and didn't break anything. The valve seals got brittle and cracked.. Smoked a little but other than that is ran fine. I didn't need to do anything to the cylinders except blob hone them to give them a good cross hatch pattern. New rings should help with the compression. I know it was down a little in that department because the rings were starting to get gunked up burning all that oil. |
