Audi A6 2006 2.0 TDi stop start

Hi All

This is my first post as I am new to this Forum, hope this is the right place to start this thread.
So the problem started towards the end of a 95mile drive to East Yorkshire, just a mile or two off the motorway the A6 ground to a halt, tried to restart to no avail.
Called the AA, who placed the battery on a charge pack and went straight to the in tank fuel pump, played around a bit and the car started.
I thought great that was easy, went on my way for about 5 miles and the same thing.
This time I was towed 90 miles back to my house in Grantham at a cost of £150.00!
When I got to the car in the light of day it started straight away!
I thought it must be a fueling problem as I drove It around the block a few times, and it stopped again. tried a couple of turn overs on the key, no start, waited 30mins and it started.
I could hear the fuel pump turning even though it would not start.
Has anybody experienced something similar? If so how did they resolve it, My thinking is a fuel blockage at the filter, a low pressure fuel pump, a stop start relay, the fact that I could hear the pump perhaps suggests filter or pump pressure.
Car mileage 140,000
Any advice welcome

Cheers

Rob

There is a recall for diesel injector replacement. The history is that an injector fails and this causes the others to shut down, which causes the car to non-start. This could possibly be the cause. You would need to get in touch with a main dealer. Before that see if you can have the engine fault memory read with a diagnostic tester. There will be an injector circuit fault logged.

Just had another thought. These engines suffer with engine speed sender problems. The sender detects the rotation of the crankshaft and when it fails, this prevents the car from starting. Are you certain you can hear the fuel pump running when the engine is cranked with the non-start fault? A faulty engine speed sender would prevent the engine ecu from allowing the fuel pump to run. Again a fault relating to the engine speed sender would be logged.
