Replacing the turn signal relay by dudley doright

Thanks To dudley doright For This Article!!

Performed On 2001 Audi A4 1.8TQ

If your turn signal indicator (the two arrows in your speedometer cluster) is intermittently acting up, your relay may need to be replaced.
I have searched the internet to find a “how to procedure” for this work and all I got was a lot of different advice. The Bentley manual that I bought for my car don’t even show the procedure, so I took a chance and tried to do the work with the help of Kextyn from this forum, I managed to succeed and save myself the ½ hour labor cost from the dealer.

So, here is your step by step procedure:

The first thing you need is to get the tools shown in Figure 1. Never use a screwdriver, because it could damage the trim. Caution in using the tool, it is very sharp and I learned my lesson when it slipped and poke my thumb. OUCH!

Figure 2 shows how to remove the face plate. There are 6 latches that were located 1 in each corner and 1 in the middle as shown in Figure 3.

Don’t worry about pulling it hard, it will eventually pop out. You may lose a couple of latches or even crack the plate but it is okay, the cost of the face plate is still less than what the dealer will charge you for the work. As a matter of fact, I broke a couple latches but a dab of crazy glue fixed the problem.

Once the plate is removed (Fig 4), you could just pull out the relay with the use of the tool. Unplug the relay from the cable shown in Figure 5 and replace it with the new one.

The assembly is the reverse procedure. Make sure you check the relay to make sure that it is functioning properly; otherwise you may have to repeat the procedure.
