hello-
i have an A5. i was at a stop light when the tachometer and speedometer went dark accept for the pointer/needle which remained illuminated red. after parking the car and applying the brake and turning OFF the car, not only (normally) was the brake switch red LED light on, but strangely also PRNDL (park, reverse, etc letters) by the shifter also remained on (they usually are off when the engine is off).

an hour later, i turned on the car and started driving, the tachometer and speedometer remained dark. i was planning to go to the dealership to have it fixed, but 5 minutes after driving the dials lit up, everything operating ok.

any ideas? is this somehow normal? my car is only three weeks old. this doesnt bode well for audi reliability.

DOH!

well, when all else fails, read the instruction manual! i had the headlight switch in the OFF position, so when it gets dark out the gauges go dark so as to inform you that you need to turn on the headlights. the PRNDL is lit up also when it is dark out.
