Should the door lock button on the driver side lock all doors when the driver door is open?

I have a 2003 A4 cab and the button will lock all doors when the driver door is closed. However, when the door is open, it will not lock the driver door. Is this intentional? If so, then you must use the fob or the key in the door to lock the vehicle when you leave. This isn't nearly as convenient as pushing a button on the door when you leave.

I've searched for this and simply can't tell if this is some sort of safety feature or a malfunction.

I'm an Audi noob and haven't figured this out either. I'm used to manually locking the door(s) as I get out but find I have to use the [non-convenience key] fob after closing the driver's door. I guess I need to revisit "central locking" in the MMI and manual.

 

I think this is to keep you from locking your keys in the car. I think its a good idea. I had a work truck once that was the only vehicle I ever had without keyless entry. Had to manually lock it and then shut the door. I locked my keys in that truck so many times! Is it really that bad having to push a button on the keychain to lock the doors. Thats what i always do, or hold it down to roll up windows and close sunroof.
