Steering wheel controls

I have a 2001 A6 2.7T that someone upgraded the original radio with the MMI nav/dvd system. I have three questions which I have researched and am more confused now than before.

1. How or can I get the steering wheel controls to work they do nothing.

2. Can anyone tell me what XM satellite receiver it is I need? Is this based on serial number? The Nav disc is from 2007.

3. At low speed if I ride over a small bump or other irregularity in the pavement I get a sudden shuddering in the front end which once I stop resolves and then the car rides and drives fine. Do not notice at speed on the road over small irregularities? Any ideas?
