Streaming audio from cellphone with RNS-E? ...will this cable work?

Hey everyone,

I just got my A3 with the RNS-E/Ipod interface. What I miss is the ability to plug my cellphone into an AUX jack and stream audio directly to the sound system.

Do you all think this attachment will work with the RNS-E software?

It LOOKS like the exact thing I would need to plug my cellphone into, then the Audi Ipod cable into the female ipod end... but I'm uncertain as to how the RNS will deal with pure audio coming through as opposed to the usual Ipod interface (selecting a folder, track etc.)

Please give me your input. I'm thinking of buying this fairly soon...

thanks!

I found this Audi "Genuine" Accessory that's offered for the Q7 but not the A3 (I don't know why),
http://www.audi-collection.com/Vehic...-Cable-for-AMI
so I know it's possible to run pure audio into the MMI without using any media interface functions... (hopefully for the A3 also )

So I went ahead and order the product pictured above, which should allow me to play music from my Android device and/or connect a USB drive.

Will report...

How did you get on?

sorry I forgot to complete this thread... this accessory did not work. For some reason, the MMI system didn't recognize the device as a source. I believe that is requires an iPhone, iPod or iPad on the other end to function correctly with the Audi iPod connector. (iPads work fine)

anyways, sorry for the bad news. I ended up buying a cheap FM broadcaster and using a 1/8" cable to connect my phone to it. The audio quality is not the best, but it does the job :D

but you said it didnt work with the MMI interface?
does anyone know if it will work with a 2008 a4 with the basic (symphony) radio?

My car, an Audi A4 Avant 2007, has a RNS-E with iPod dock connector in the glove box and a bluetooth module for telephone connectivity. I also have an official iPhone cradle in the centre arm rest. The iPhone is charged via the cradle and uses the bluetooth to integrate the phone with the car. This works just fine.

However, I would like to play music from my iPhone, in it's cradle, using the cars speakers. So I thought I could modify the cradle and connect the audio output pins on the cradle dock connector to the iPod dock connector in the glove box.

So I purchased a dock extender cable and cut off the male end and the took the Audi iPhone cradle apart and soldered the audio output pins (2,3 & 4) to the correct exposed wires on my modified extender cable. I also had to connect pin 1 to 11 on the Audi iPhone cradle dock connector to tell the iPhone to play the audio out of the dock connector not the internal speaker. I also had to connect pin 21 to pin 1 via a 68k resistor to tell the iPhone not to display any messages about incompatiable accessories.*

When I put the iPhone in the cradle, which is not yet fitted in the car, and connect the female end of the modified extender cable into my kitchen powered speakers the audio from the iPhone comes out of the powered speakers.*

When I transfer the cradle to the car and connect the female end of the modified extender cable to the iPod dock connector in the glove box and then put the phone in the cradle the phone charges and when a song is played no messages are displayed, but the audio doesn't come out of the cars speakers and CD's 1 to 6 are greyed out.*

However, when an unmodified extender cable is used the RNS-E recognises that the iPhone is connected and, although doesn't charge the iPhone, when a song is played it comes out of the car speakers.*

What I think is going on is that the RNS-E is 'talking' to the iPhone over USB with my modified cable these pins are not connected and hence why it is not working. To make things more complex the iPhone cradle uses the USB pins to charge the phone so it is not as simple as just connecting the USB pins.*

This got me thinking, does the CD changer use the same audio input pins as when the RNS-E is configured with an AUX input. So if I re-configure the RNS-E so that it thinks it doesn't have a CD Changer but has an AUX input instead then will this get around the problem of the RNS-E trying to 'talk' to the iPhone over USB?*

Have you considered a much simpler solution. There is a product called CoolStream Bluetooth receiver that will connect right to your cable in the glove box. Now you just pair it with your phone and stream your music right from your phone through your car stereo. Check it out, it is simple and easy. I have one and love it.
