Do not go to the dealer, you can try to go to a car audio shop and everyone I talked to said they would remove the head unit using the DIN removal tools for like 5 bucks but they do not sell the tools. However after doing some research I found that Wal-mart sells the removal tools for a whopping $3.95

I will be stopping there on the way home and give it the old college effort I will let you know how it goes.

Point being if you can save yourself $80-$90 bucks from having the stealership do it for you, you could atleast try with the ones that Wal-Mart has!

 

have a friend help, its tough to use all 4 at the same time when you only have 2 hands

 

I actually went to Wal-Mart and bought the ones that I put the link for in my original post, went out to the car in the parking lot, opened them up, put them in the holes until they clicked, and the head unit came right out. I was surprised how easy it slid right out. So I will be replacing my head unit this weekend and wont have to worry about taking out the head unit.

You don't really expect much from Wal-mart in terms of car audio/maitenance parts, but these really surprised me.

What model car do you have? Do you know if it'd be the same for a '97 A4 Quattro?

 

I have a 95 A6 Quattro and my head unit has 4 little holes in each corner. Its a single DIN I don't know if the 97's havea double DIN or not. If yours is a single DIN and you see those 4 holes then yes this will work in your car.

 

Yes you just need the Euro radio removal tool.... it is a tool that looks liek this.....
Some of the other ones you find maybe 3 headed but one of the sides will look liek this.....

I have also made my own by taking a small piece of metal and using a grinder to make a 45 degree edge and then put a small notch in it liek the picture.... what also works very well.

 

you can also use a small knife or nail file or something sturdy but thin. all you need to do is get the clips pushed back and you can then carefully pry the headunit out. dealerships actually charge you to take it out? haha thats crazy.
