i paint cars for a living and ill be the first to tell you painting over chrome isnt the best idea if you do a lot of high way driving. but if you really want to just get a grey scuffpad and run over entire surface to be painted. after that use a wax and grease remover to clean it. apply the first coat as light as u can. hold the paint can/spray gun about a foot away and just fog it on so its a bunch of little specks. wait 3-5 minutes depending on temperature. if its below 70 you might want to wait an extra minute or two. do the same for the second coat. you can put the 3 coat on a little heavier and a fourth if needed. i would recommend putting one or two coats of clear after you are done coloring. also i would recommend not buying cheap paint/clear. paint does not tend to stick to chrome all that great but if you follow these steps and dont put a lot of miles on your car you should be alright. i hope this helps.

I Just flat blacked My B6 A4's chrome grills and it looks better IMO if you scuff it with like 80 grit sand paper. the key is good paint and many light coats. many light coats is the main point. P.S. A4mods.com does have a write up.

can you powder coat plastic though, with out warping the plastic?

ive done my front chrome badges on the grill about 3 weeks ago. i rubbed down the badge and grill surround untill the chrome finish was really dull. then usual steps. i put on a few coats of clear lacquer. i also put them in a warm cuboard so the paint sticks better. i do 300 miles a week and so far no chips.

good luck
