Cover up tattoo, can an old tattoo really be hidden properly?
Hi guys, quick question from Los Angeles. I got a tattoo in my early twenties that I honestly regret now. It’s not terrible, just badly done and the design doesn’t mean anything to me anymore. I’m thinking about getting a cover up tattoo. Has anyone here done it?
Yeah, I had something similar. I covered an old tribal piece on my shoulder a few years ago. The artist used darker shades and a much bigger design to mask the original lines. If the tattooist knows what he’s doing, the old ink becomes almost impossible to notice. Just choose someone experienced.
I went through last year, so I can share my experience. My first tattoo was a small name on my forearm that aged badly and the lettering spread over time. A good artist looked at it and explained that cover ups usually require a larger and more detailed design to properly disguise the original ink. He suggested a black and grey piece with shading and texture, which worked really well. Now you can’t even tell there was something underneath unless I mention it. My advice, don’t rush it, research tattooists who specialise in cover ups and be open to their design suggestions.
