Default 01 Audi A6 4.2L in correct gear ratio problem .

I'm thinking about buying an Audi A6 4.2 L Quattro, but it has a code that reads incorrect gear ratio. The gentleman wants 1200 or best offer . If I can pick this car up for 500 would it be worth it.? How much would a rebuilt transmission cost?
It only has about 109,000 miles. He says he has receipts for a new water pump and timing belt kit replacement from a garage. Other than that I know nothing about this car. Please in desperate need of insight.

A trans rebuild will cost you a couple of thousand easy. Not including removing it. Still might be worth the price if you can get it for $500..... I know I'd be tempted if it was in good shape.

Thank you for your reply. I want a head and bought the car, now all I need to do is find a used transmission. I found one place that will offer one year warranty on a used transmission from 1000 up to $1700 depending on what type of transmission I have.
