04 Allroad starting problem (flooding)?8
Hey guys,
I have a fuel delivery issue going on.
If my car has been sitting for hours it will start right up with no issue. If I drive it a short period and turn it off it doesn't want to start and is flooding out. It can take 20/30 minutes to get it running again.
I have replaced the fuel pressure regulator (3) times and it solves the problem for a few days and then it's back again......please! Anyone have any suggestions?????

It's probably the coolant temp sensor. If it is not reading correctly the ECU will deliver too much fuel (cold start conditions). Be sure to get another retainer clip when you get the sensor. I broke mine (they are plastic) removing it. I'm not sure of the location on the engine where yours would be but it would be in one of the coolant pipes along the rear of the engine. Probably buried behind the intake trunking do it's going to take a little unplugging and uncovering to get to. There are a couple of videos on Youtube that may help.

But, anyway, the car will start cold but is difficult to start hot, the temp sensor is more than likely the culprit. The ECU is simply assuming a cold start condition even when the engine is warm so it's dumping extra fuel in there that it doesn't need. If the temp gauge on the dash isn't working, that is certainly an indication that the sensor is going bad.
Here's a decent video that shows you were it's located.
Found another one. It's a non-turbo but the location is the same. I recommend this fellows method of removing the sensor with the electrical connection attached and bringing it over to where you can get the connector loose and not risk breaking it. If you break the electrical connector, it's damn near impossible to replace. Just be patient removing it and you'll be fine.

Well, you solved the problem nobody else could! I watched the videos and after starting to tear into things I noticed I didn't need to take out the air box to even get to it, so that saved me some time. Total time about 20mins. Unfortunately, I spent $220 on 3 fuel pressure regulators because that's all anyone could come up with since I had no codes popping up. Total cost was $16.00 for a lifetime warrantied engine coolant temp sensor.
Thanks so much for the lead!!!

Been there. Spent almost $600 a couple of years ago on a fuel pump, tank gasket and seal kit, and a few other odds and ends over a couple of glazed spark plugs.. LOL Live and learn. Glad you got it sorted out, man.
I did have to replace the temp sensor on the same car though. It gave me a code that referenced "Coolant Temp Low" one day. I had left my code reader plugged in and was watching the data from the temp sensor while I was driving down the road. Glanced over and one second the temp as 192 the next it went to 70 for about 10 seconds.. It was getting hard to start, period. Popped in new temp sensor and all those problems went away..
