2003 Audi TT Overheating Issue

Recently picked up a 2003 TT Roadster with 79k miles on it. Had it professionally pre-inspected and everything checked out sound. After about 2 days of local driving I started experiencing intermittent water temperature problems. Very reputable independent service center specializing in German cars quickly suggested as I thought one of the fans wasn't working or worst case water pump was bad.

They first verified through some type of test that the head gasket was sound and no trace of Carbon Monoxide I believe he said, the fans were operational, and a flow test determined the water pump was probably bad.

They removed the water pump and sure enough about 3/4's of the plastic impeller were gone or destroyed. New water pump and timing belt were placed on but the vehicle is still overheating. They stated they observed several of the broken impeller parts did fall out when they removed the old pump.

They fear that some of the parts may have lodged in either the radiator, thermostat housing or worst case within the block. They took off the radiator and flow tested it and it checked in working order. They are now proceeding to remove and replace the thermostat.

So presuming worst case and this does not fix the problem does any one have experience and or suggestions as too what may be going on? Is it possible that some of the broken impeller parts have lodged themselves within the block and is obstructing water flow? If so, is there a known repair or solution?

Any help is appreciated.

Does it sometimes just run kinda hot, or does it sometimes get really hot so you have to stop and let it sit? Is it just the gauges, or do you start seeing steam, oil temp getting really hot too, etc?

Just got the vehicle back and the problem was also a faulty thermostat. The vehicle runs great now and no more overheating issues.

Thanks for the reply.
