Unhappy 2006 Audi A6 4.2 Quattro

My 2006 Audi A6 had an oil leak, check engine light was on. Mechanics had to swap crank case sensor and gaskets, repair the leak. They also told me that I needed to replace the radiator which somehow was leaking. I had this work done, cost me $2K. A day later the check engine light came back on. My regular mechanic recommended I bring it to Audi Service as they could not diagnose what was now causing my engine to misfire. They changed out all the coils, swapped banks, kept throwing codes. Now I speak with Manager from Audi Service and he tells me that the car is not worth fixing. He tells me that I need a new cylinder head, timing chains, seals, adjusters, etc. And that that will cost over $12K in parts!! Has anyone had a similar problem with much different results with a much better repair shop? Please advise ......

Sounds like a bunch of incompetents.. Pull the OBD error codes from the ECU (they can do that for free at Advance Auto, Pepboys, and other major chains). Post them here. But have you put new spark plugs in it? I chased a spark plug issue with my A8 about 5 years ago that drove me nuts. Turned out I had a couple of glazed spark plugs causing a misfire.

Thank you for getting back to me. No, I don't believe anyone who looked at the car did anything with the spark plugs. I pulled the error codes tho, they are:

P0303 - Cylinder 3 misfire
P0301 - Cylinder 1 misfire
P0300 - Random/Multiple cylinder misfire

Again, I wasn't having any engine problems. When I took the car in for repair, the check engine light was on, tho I did not notice a difference in the driving of the car, and I was having a recommended oil leak fixed. Again, they told me I needed a radiator! They repaired the oil leak etc. I have also attached the invoices for the repair with the diagnosis and repairs from the various shops. This has been a bad four weeks.

I appreciate any thing you may have to suggest. I just can't bring myself to junk the car.

Replace those spark plugs.. I bet it fixes the misfire issue.

When you do put new plugs in, disconnect both terminals from the battery and touch them together and let it sit disconnected for a hour or two. This will clear the ECU of any codes and bad "memories" of contended with the misfires. Reconnect the battery. When you go to start it, turn the key on but do not engage the starter right away. Leave it in the on position for about 10-15 seconds THEN start it. The engine may stumble on the restart but should recover fine as the ECU "re-learns" things.

IMPORTANT: Be sure you have your radio code, "SAFE CODE", to reactivate the radio if it prompts before disconnecting the battery. The radio code should be in the radio owners manual. It is a sticker placed in the first page or two of the manual.

Let us know how it goes.
