3K at 70mph

so i was test driving a 98 1.8t quattro and on my way home the tach stayed at 3grand at 70mph, and im getting the car for 14hun because of loud engine noise, it almost like a lifter tick if u no what i mean any thoughts?

does the sound increase with rpm increase? if so may be rod bearings

it dos seem to get louder as i rev it, still going easy on it

by general engine knowledge sound like you might have a rod-knock bu then again, I never took apart a 1.8... I would have a someone with a little knowledge on the 1.8 engine check it out before you buy it, you might end up dumping a lot of cash into it just to get that repaired... As far as your engine doing 3K RPM at 70MPH that's normal on these cars, my '04 with 6 speed does 3K RPM at 80MPH. 14 hundred bucks seems rather cheap, hope you're not buyin a lemon and end up completely dissapointed, just remember you get what you pay for.

Like above, 3k is normal. I do 3200 at 70 mph. But if you are worried about rod knock first thing to do is drain the oil and tin can open the oil filter to look for shavings... best of luck!

Yea thats a smart decision. 1.4k is 1k too much
