Default 96 A4 tranny wont go in reverse

So my girls got a 96 a4, we live in northern illinois and we had floods all over tonight. She decides to go through a big *** puddle of water and now the trans wont go into reverse. Drive and Park work fine. Any ideas?

You mean you can't force it into reverse or it just doesn't work?

I can put the shifter in reverse but the tranny wont engange. When I put it in reverse it stays in neutral.

Have you replaced the fluid recently? Filled it up? Trans fluid should be done every 10k miles, if it is not can lead to corrosion of parts in the trany...this sounds like this one is done sry to say.

No the trans works fine, when its in drive it shifts normally and when i put it in park its fine also. Is there a trans switch on these cars and where is it located?

I would say its a bad TR (transmission range) switch, have the dealer check the fault codes in the TCM. If you have a vag com or know someone with one have them scan it and save some money. Its most likely a electrical error if the car still shifts going forwards.

I thought it would be somethin like the trans switch, is this easy to get to? I know its on top of the trans and how much would it cost for one?

No im talking about the switch thats under the chrome shifter plate. You have to remove the shift ****, the wood trim around the shifter, pop up the chrome plate, and replace the switch under the plate. It looks like a green circuit board.
