96 AUDI A4 QUATTRO TRANS QUESTION.
So i took my car to the shop today, because it was getting really bad gas milage all the sudden ( 14 mpg[:@])and the wheels were skipping on corners.
They said that there was something wrong with my trans and it was causing the car to drive full time in 4wd.
They gave me an estimate of between 2-3k (more like 3 if they have to replace the trans).
my car has 138 k on it.
i just wanted to know if anyone else has had this happen and what you did about it.
if their estimate was accurate. dont want to end up paying 5 grand for the repair if something goes wrong.
thanks in advance.

ouch... I'd do two things. Slap the 'mechanic' and find an actual Audi mechanic. Quattro is AWD, meaning full time 4WD.
And also what kind of transmission? I'm assuming its a 2.8L 12v engine since its a 96?

yep.... 2.8L 12v auto
the only problem is.. the guy is an import mechanic and they fix alot of german cars.
i know that the car is full time all wheel drive but shouldnt the differentials not make the tires skip on corners?
also, the check engine light turned on yesterday, since i didint have a full check up of the engine i dont know exactly what it is.
what could be broken that turns on the check engine light and also accounts for the low milage?

RE: 96 AUDI A4 QUATTRO TRANS QUESTION.
If the differentials have broken they will bind and cause the wheels to skip in turns which will be very pricy to fix. Would also reduce fuel economy. As for the check engine light theres about a million causes almost all of which will result in decreased fuel economy.
