98 a4 2.8 timing question
Ive got a question here. Im doing my tb on my 98 a4 2.8 30v. Once i line up the crank, then all i do is install the cam lock bar and that will be correct timing. So as long as that bar fits on the cams, Im good. They Wont have to be spun 180 deg or anything. Originally i lined up the crank but the cams were not even close to looking right with the large holes facing in. That being the case can i just turn everything by hand to line them up?? I know i have to pop the cams too. Just wana make sure that if they are out of wack i can just turn everything by hand, install locking tool and im good??
Thank you
Thank you

You need to get a locking tool for the crank to make sure it's in the right spot. It's basically a screw-in pin that goes in the side of the block (there is a plug in that spot normally) and engages the crank to keep it from moving much like the cam lock bar. Once the crank is locked in the correct position (it's not necessarily TDC) the large holes on the cam gears should face inward toward each other and accept the locking bar.
