A3 TDI Idle Problem

My A3 tdi occassionally knocks the revs up to 1100 for a few minutes then returns to normal. It allows pulses on idle a hundred revs or so no & then for a few minutes. Any ideas?

any CEL light on?? when was the fuel filter changed?? does it start ok when cold??

no lights on, fuel filter change 2000 miles ago, no vacuum leaks and starts perfectly!
