A4 B5 clutch gone already?

Hello,

I have a a 2000 a4 b5. Two days ago, there were problems with the car getting into gear. It wouldn't catch properly in first gear. Well, the mechanic said it needs a whole new clutch system. The price is $1200 for parts and $800 for labor. Does it make sense that after82,000 milesthe car needs a whole new clutch kit (fly wheel ,etc, the works)? Does 10 hours make sense for this job? What the hell do I do? The car is at their shop. It can still be driven (I am not sure how long it will last for).

Thank

NB

hmmmmm he could check the clutch slave cylinder before he condemns the clutch ( because the problem was sudden ) clutch ware is progressive and not instant

I am not sure whether this has anything to do with it, but the clutch did let out high since I first had it (about 2 years). It would let out right at the top.

Also, it seems that when getting into first, or reverse, there was not enough power. So the car would do this shaking thing until totally in gear.
