Default A4 shift mode issues

I have a 1999 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro with Tiptronic. Recently after coming to a stop the transmission occasionally switches from 'D' in the automatic transmision to '1' in the Tiptronic transmission.

I don't touch the shifter and it remains in the 'D' position. The instrument panel indicator also switches from the automatic to the manual mode...

Shifting to park and back into 'D' seems to fix the issue temporarily.

Dealer says I may need a new transmission. I seriously doubt that's the problem. Other possibilities are the transmission control module and the switch that senses the shifter position.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Having the same problem except mine is constant. Guess I'll keep searching the forums.
