Default Air Filter

Does anyone know what model number I should be getting for an air filter? Brand and model number? I just went to Autozone and they brought my car up on the computer and gave me the filter. I got home and what do ya know, it is not the right size. My car is a 2001 A6 4.2L Quattro. I was checking everything out today and noticed that the air filter is extremely dirty. It's almost black. I don't think the stealership put a new one in it when I bought it. My bad for not checking sooner I guess.

I think i'm going to track down a K&N for my A8 this weekend. On my old 3.5 Altima, it gave more hp, better fuel mileage & a more throaty roar.

Why is there no box on the Audi? You just place the filter in the tray and that's it? I thought it was very odd. I'll probably get the K&N though.

There is a box for the air filter for the engine. The filter that is in the tray is the cabin air filter.

AH HA! Thank you very much for the info. I had no idea what it was for. Do you replace them or just clean them? My cabin filter is really terrible looking. It's almost black.

You do replace them but he can also clean them. Even a new cabin air filter will look black. The filter is filled with a carbon compound that helps clean the air of any pollution, hence the black look to it. The cabin filter is a type of HEPA filter designed to purify the air.

Do you get them at the auto parts store? Mine is more than just a carbon black. It's filthy. It had bugs and leaves and crap in it. Looked as if it's never been replaced.

Do you have any pics of your A6? Sounds like we have the same model. I never knew what the actual color of mine was. It's a dark blue with light interior.

Here is a link for you. But make sure you get the right model for you since I have saved a link to this website with my car info already in it.
