hey frazert their are quite a few possabilities of how to fix the problem
1. low end lamba probe (before cat) is faulty and not sending the right information to the air mass meter, so its telling it to put too much air into the air/fuel mixture
2. depending on witch car it is, it could be something to do with the port deactivation valves witch shuts of one of the inlet manifold ports if the valves dont close then too much air would go into the combustion chamber
3.or it could just need a new air mass meter witch is the cheapest solution and the most common so i would get a new one and try that first.
hope i have been a help

Is this the same thing as the mass air flow sensor? If so, I just had mine replaced and that was all it took. Pretty cheap fix too. Mine was under warranty but the guy at Audi said that they are cheap parts to buy. I hear they are simple to do also.

its probably a air/vacuum leak/exhaust/intake leak but yes it could also be the MAF sensor/fuel pressure/pump/injectors leaking/EVAP canister purge valve/HO2S ( heated o2 sensor ),

go for the air leak first
