Car will not start after alternator replacement
Hello All,
I'm new to this forum but hope you can help with you ideas/suggestions.
I own 2000 Audi A6 2.8Q it has 120K miles. I have done timing belt replacement recently.
Driving on the highway about 70 miles away from where I live I had car stole.
Looked like alternator was dead. After I pulled off the road I could not start it. Neither jump-start.
Car was towed to some local shop in NJ. After few days mechanic said that he ordered alternator.
To make story short - 9 day later he supposedly replaced alternator and he tells me that car will not start.
He also says that it seems like timing belt slipped causing the engine damage. I immediately replyied that it's not possible.
He replied that there is no compression on the engine.
Please help!!!
Is it really possible that alternater could cause timing belt slippage?
Looks like the only option I have now is to tow it to my mechanic. (which I should have done in the first place)
Thank you
David

RE: Car will not start after alternator replacement
I will have to clarify details with mechanic (I'm 55 miles away from and waitning for call from him), but according to himengine is turning.
By the way, here is a little bit more infor:
there light smoke when I opened hood when car initially stole. Looked like engine was overheated. Coolant level was ok.
And temperature was a bit higher that the middle mark.
Hope this does not make thinks even more confusing.
Thanks,
David

RE: Car will not start after alternator replacement
Wanted to give some feedback on the problem.
When I went to the shop to tow car and pay for their work mechanic showed me alternator. It was indeed jammed. I could even see wiring was melted on the inside. After $200 + tolls and few hours later my car was in the shop with my mechanic.
He was able to start in in less than 30 minutes. He said that looked liked car engine was flooded.
My guess - with heavy rains they kept the car with hood open.
I can believe this.
I have to learn the lesson - always take to your mechanic regardless the fees/towing charges.
