I got a 2001 Audi a4 1.8T....the only problem that I'm having now is that the CEL never comes on! Like at all....you know when you turn the key (but don't start the car) the CEL show appear then disappear....well it doesn't even light up...therefore....still can't pass smog! The car runs great! I don't have any codes show at all but the dang light has never came on since i bought the car. I have no idea why....any suggestions guys? Could it be the whole instrument panel?

how the heck do i open the instrument cluster? It's a pain in the butt!

there is a little cover above the steering wheel that pops right off, there are 2 phillips screws behind that cover after those 2 are out pull out the cluster iwth a bit fo finese, there should be 3 clusters of cabeles, and then a single wire that has the CEL bulb on it, i have no idea what kinda of bulb that is though, i need to get me o2 sensor replaced so i know i have a CEL but that fact eh light is off means it one less unneccesary light i have to look at.

 

Why not try getting a free scan at Autozone to detect what trouble codes came up. Usually it's just a temporary event detected by the computer and can then be cleared and you're all good. At times it's just nothing more than minor auto body parts issue such as a loose gas cap. It's always good to check for the codes though your car is running ok as that could be a warning of a developing problem.
