Default Clicking while accelerating

Hi all,

I tried the search function and didn't come up with what I was looking for. I have a 1999 Audi A4 1.8t, completely stock and lately I have been noticing a clicking sound when I accellerate. I did some experimenting and I can verify that the sound doesn't occur when I am idle, maintaining a constant speed, and I lose the ability to hear it when I am over 5k rpms. I'm not sure if the sound goes away, or if the engine noise just covers the sound. I run only premium fuel (91+ octane) in my Audi and get regular oil changes with 5w30 full synthetic oil. I just got a Vag-COM, and the only 2 error codes I recieve pertain to ABS (shitty abs controller) and the engine running lean. I had autozone clear the running lean code and it didn't reappear for about 2 months after, so I figure that has nothing to do with this problem. Any assistance you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Yeah i got a similar prob with me 02 S4. i only get it on light to moderate accelaration when i
change gears. Like u said u can hear it coming from the from the front of the car and only at very low
speeds
Had a technician from Audi drive and listen but it wasnt doin it for him!
But when i drove home it did it for me!
U cant hear it if u got the radio on though which i guess is good?

if it is actualy running lean, that could be doing it. Sounds like your getting alittle pre detonation. WHat are the engine/outside condisiont during the times it makes this noise.

hey does it start at a certain speed?i had a noise start at about 30mph,i have an 03' A4 3.0 and i noticed a sound similar to that and thought it was my transmission but the audi mechanic found it out to be my wheel bearing.just a thought maybe thats the same thing as you.

Well, i've heard it when the engine is warm in spring driving, but I notice it most when I am below 30mph and my engine is cold, I usually let my car run for a couple mins in the morning before I head to work, but the engine isn't at running temp yet usually. My running lean code came back on again, thats usually a MAF according to the usual search function, so I suppose I will start with that and see how it goes, unless people have more suggestions.

I have absolutly no knowlege of this problem but you might want to serch out the sludge issue. that could be causing a tapit noise from insufisiant oil flow. just a thought

If you need an MAF, get a remanufactured one.
