clutch master cylinder probs?

This was also posted on the B5 forums, and is quickly sinking to the bottom w/ no replys...

Car: 1998 Audi A4 2.8QM
For a while my clutch has been getting soft, to the point where its now down to about the last 1/2-3/4" of pedal travel (engagement happens in the last 1/2-3/4" of travel). I thought it was the original clutch finally letting go (it has 142k and has taught both my brother and I how to drive stick), but I show no signs of slippage in higher gears. I took it in for an estimate and the guy thought it was the master cylinder...can anyone else verify?

Also, if this helps, I have a smell coming from under the hood (no surprise there) that smells like hydraulic oil (i remember it from when the power steering leaked on our 1995 A6, but the power steering is fine on my A4). Its most noticeable after the car's been driven a while. Where is the master cylinder located on the B5?

Any help would be appreciated...thanks guys

its on the driver side of the transmission if you took the trans out & laid it on the ground it would be in the 10 o clock possition you can not see it you can put your hand up there & feel it though only one allen bolt holds it in i belive its a 5 mill
