Default Code 0341 and 0011 A6 3.2 Q

2005 A6 3.2 Quattro, 165k miles, impeccably maintained. Check engine light, Codes 0341 and 0011. Found 0341 in a search in these forums, but could not find a combo of the two. The engine is running fine - not rough, missing, etc. Feels and sounds perfect. I have an awesome Audi mechanic (small local shop opened by an Audi factory certified tech - he only does Audi, nothing else) but I would like to fix it myself if it's easy. If it's a camshaft sensor, I would maybe try. Timing, no. Timing chain, no no no.

My little book that came with the ODB II scanner says:

0341 - Camshaft Position Sensor A - Bank 1 CKT Range/Performance
0011 - Camshaft Position Actuator A - Bank 1 Timing Over-Advanced

When I looked in the user manual, I was under the impression that this particular model and engine did not require that somewhat-standard Audi timing chain replacement at a specific mileage.

Ideas?

I would swap bank 1 and bank 2 camshaft sensors and adjuster solenoids. Clear faults, drive it and see where it moves to.

And if the faults move with the sensors, then it's a sensor problem -- and if they stay the same, it's the actual timing being off or a bad cam tensioner? Is there something else it could be if the faults stay?

A cam sensor won't cause those codes, especially those 2 together. First possible is the camshaft actuator solenoid valve being stuck in the advanced position. Another is the camshaft actuator itself is broken or jammed advanced. Could also be a broken chain tensioner or another mechanical failure in the cam timing system.

The P011 means the cam is too far advanced (in other words, the valves open too soon). Could be only one cam (passenger side bank) or both. The CMP only reads off one of them and I can't recall off hand if it's intake or exhaust right now.

The P0341 means the crank and cam are out of sync (correlation error) according to the ECM program parameters most likely because it's over advanced (see P0011).

Maybe this helps a little?

Question: Is the camshaft actuator, VVT solenoid, and intake cam control valve the same thing? I am quite confused about the lingo while researching, and I would just like some clarity.

Thank you!
