Default compression test

If i have all the cams removed all of the valves should be closed right? Therefore doing a compression test without any belts installed or timing set should be fine right? Only the crank will turn over is my assumption.

i'll answer my own question...no you cant do a compression test with all the valves closed. No air would be allowed into the cylinder for it to compress. You would get a vacuum in the cylinder if it was at TDC and pulled down, and you would get pressure if the piston were at the bottom of its stroke. A leak down test would work.

Hi,
Do a leak down test. Each piston should be at TDC when you doe the test.

I did the leak down test and the best reading I got was 80% leakage on one cylinder. The other 5 were all at least 90% leakage. Pulled the passenger side head and there is no visible mechanical damage to any of the valves but the carbon buildup on them is bad. Found a reputable machine shop that does Audis and will be taking the heads to them. Worst case..replace all valves and seals $500-$700 per head. Best case..clean, seat, and pressure test replacing a couple of vales here and there $80-$100 per head. He said unless the timing belt broke at speed it is unlikely I have major damage. Tomorrow I pull number 2 and Friday take them up and say a foxhole prayer!!

P.S The consolation is that I did not mess anything up with my blunder but rather discovered problems that would have resulted in catastrophic damage soon after changing the belt.

cheapest place for Audi valves is Amazon. $10-12 each. Napa have the valve seals at about $1.40 each.
You probably should take a close look at the face on the lifter, the exhausts get pitted and damage the cam. I usually replace them all with INA units $300 or so if the motor is much above 60k miles.

thanks for the tips. I will end up putting more money in this motor than I originally planned but I will have a nice car that runs well for under $3000. Not bad Id say.
