DIY on 1.8T timing belt?
 

I am at 57k on my 01 TT quattro with the 1.8t and i was wondering if a timing belt is something that is feasable to do it myself. Some people say its nothing i want to touch, and others are willing to help.

Also, does anyone know if its the type of belt that if it breaks its likely to take out valves, or will i just be stranded somewhere? Im looking to get a service manual cause i want to make maintaining this thing a learning experience as i have little experience with these engines or turbo systems in general. Plus it will be cheaper. Thanx a lot!

First, buy a manual.

Read it, then change the belt.

I bought a belt for my '90 5 cyl, at an imports parts store yesterday. 15 bucks, US.

From what I gather, here, it's like a 600 USD job at the dealers. I have changed the belts on my older 5 cyl Audis without the "special tools" to hold the crank and cam in line.

It can be done, but if you are leery, look for a mech who will do it for a reasonable amount. I think import garages just decide it is a 600 buck job, charge you that, and be damned to you.

V-6, I would not think is that much different. No, the 1.8 is a 4 cyl, isn't it. Go by the book. Make sure the cam gear marks are right, and the fly wheel marks are in line, should be no problem

Dealers charge $1,000 to $1,200 and independents $500 to $700. You have an interference engine, where valves and pistons collide. Have this done between 60K and 90K. The prices above include the water pump , accessory belts , tensioner and damper pulley.
