Default Engine dying above 30mph

Hi, I have a '99 A6 which runs fine until above 30mph. When in gear and doing above 30 it is fine but if i take it out of gear or dip the clutch for more than approx. 2 seconds the revs drop smoothly down to 0 and obviously everything stops!!.
Car has been to garage and nothing is showing when plugged in!
Garage reckon it could be the accelarator and want £300 to replace! If this is prob. then why only above 30mph?
Any ideas??

you might have a blocked catalytic converter. try taking em off and going for a spin. At low back pressure the car should be fine but with a blocked cat and at higher speed its creating too much back pressure and it kills the engine. and when its in gear and moving the force driving the wheels and tranny are enough to keep the engine moving. As far as it not reading anything, it probably wont if the engine is running fine
