My 99 A6 Q air conditioning system broke hard. The compressor froze and trashed itself along with the reciever dryer, etc. Loacal Audi dealer wants $2500 ++. Local mechanic wants
$2000+ to fix. My questions are this:

1) I can do the repair myself and the pump alone is $1100+. Not to mention the other parts. I figure 2 days of work on and off. Does this sound right?

2) Audi repair CD'S on ebay. I know they are weak, but can the pssible be good enough to do this one job?

3) I found a deal on a 99 A4 compressor. The guy sez it is the same part as my early vin# A6. Ever hear of this?

4) Any other tips of concern. ie; parts websites for reman parts, or any other info about this big repair?

Find a mechanic that will use a used compressor. I think your year doesn't have a low pressure valve.

 

replaceing the parts isnt hard its evacutating and recharging the system thats a pain. i recently replaced the serpintine belt because it was slipping the the A/C compressor but i accidentually released the refigerant. theres no low side on the early cars so i have to tatke it to audi and pay 250$ to recharge it, when i could have just paid 50$ for 2lbs of refrigerant. so i say get the bentley repair manual( or Hayes bith work good i have a Hayes) and do the work yourself( use used parts if you wish whos really gonna know) and just take it to audi to recharge it. altogether your looking at roughly 400-500$. better than a grand or 2.
