Default I'm about to go crazy! Please help 2002 Audi TT

Okay so one day I'm driving, my radio cuts on and off when I put on my signal lights, my speedometer was on zero and I was doing at least 60 on the interstate. I got off on the nearest exit and cut my car off at a gas station but I needed a jump to get it started again. It takes about 2 miles to get from the gas station to my home and I had to stop 6 times to get a jump start to make it home. Here's where things get interesting; everyone was telling me it was my alternator so about a month later of the car just sitting in my yard I finally got someone who was willing to put my alternator on but before he got started he turned the car on to see what it would do and the car started just fine. He let the car run for about 20 mins to see if it would cut off, it didn't. He left without changing the alternator. About 5 hours later I went back out to start my car and it started just fine! Does anybody know what may be the problem? I'm still afraid to drive it because I don't want to get on the interstate again and it cut off on me. Please help and thanks for reading!
PS although the car was sitting a month we still tried to start it but nothing until the day the machanic came.

Everything you mention is controlled by the ignition switch. On the B5s it's a known fail point and I would be surprised if the TT doesn't have similar issues.
