Need Help! Blinking gear display

Having problem with gear display. Starts blinking, then will stop with check engine light coming on. Car drives fine. Took to dealer, and they said the computer gave conflicting error display. They reset the dash board and the problem went away, now it is back. Dont want to get ripped off, please help. much thanks.

If the gear selector display blinks, it could indicate a problem with the tranny. Have your wrench check it out.

Dealer wants to overhaul tranny!!!!!!! The car is driving fine. Apparently, the computer is giving conflicting information about where the problem is.
Cant imagine dropping 8K on a car with just 54000 miles. Could this be a sensor?

I encountered a similar problem too. My 2004 A4 Multitronic suddenly gives me this blinking gear display on the dashboard but the car is travelling fine. It started with a sudden change from "D" to "S" even without shifting the gear stick to "S". When I notice something is wrong and try to shift the gear stick pass "N", the display start to blink. The car is still moving fine.
Went to check with Audi dealer and told that something wrong with the gear transmission control unit and need to get it replace. The cost is > $4000 !!!!. Dealer also told me that it is not safe to drive anymore cause the engine could stall anytime since it can not communicate with the enginer control unit.
Do not want to get rip off just because of some software glitches!!! as long as it is still safe to drive, I wont be bother by the blinking light!
Anybody can help?

No Code was displayed but just blinking "PRNDS". Car still moving fine.
Audi dealers said dangerous https://www.audiforums.com/micons/m15.gifto drive and better change the gear transmission unit and it is costly!!https://www.audiforums.com/micons/m12.gif

I am not sure whether they are right? If the display is only a readout for convenience purpose, it should not be a safe shutdown feature that can stop the car when driving in the middle of the highway.

A lit up prndl switch usually is due to a faulty or failing transmission range switch. on quattros they're located on the driver side of the trans behind the mount. cvt's are located in the trans control module located inside the rear of the trans. cvt's are pretty costly to replace, quattro switches are around 450.00 or so. Maybe time to switch to a manual?
