overheating/hot coolant... ??

I own a 1996 audi a6.
Recently the coolant temp/level warning light came on, i stopped the car and opened the hood, the coolant level was fine and there was no spilled coolant anywhere around.
while it was happening the temp gage in the car always read its normal running level.

the next day i took a spin around the block to let the car warm back up.. no light . The next evening i made a 60 mile drive, still no light. But yesterday while driving back the light came on about halfway back... pulled over let it cool and went the rest of the way with no prob..

any ideas on this ?? thermostat, ECT sensor ?
iv almost ruled out a water pump, because with my experience when those go it spits coolant everywhere and overheats very very fast

any thoughts?

Are you sure it was a temp warning and not a coolant level warning? If you have no overheating issues you may have a bad level sensor.

yea.. the light that came on means COOLANT TEMP/LEVEL, a new holding tank being put in later this week and wel see..
