Default Overheating problems?

I have a 2001 Audi TT Quartro - I bought it about a year ago. While sitting on the highway in near 100 degree heat my temp gage started climbing, and my air turned off. Is this normal? Once I started moving the gage began dropping but I've been nervous about it since.

Default Temp sender/gauge

I would expect this to be due to a faulty temp sender or gauge in the dash pannel this will need to be tested by VAG with final control on the dash and checking the temprature reading from the sender in measured block values, somtimes the loom can become damaged where it joins to the temp sender best to get it checked out stright away.
