Programming key remote problems
Last week I bought a 2006 A6 replacing my 1999 A6. It came with two key remotes that were not working. I replaced the batteries and asked two nearby dealers how to program them. Neither knew. They tried various things unsuccessfully with the car in the parking lot. At least there was no charge. I found out that if I turned the key on and off several times I would eventually get a loud click in the dash and the remote would be programmed. But once I drove the car and then shut it off, there needed to be another loud click, or the remote would lose the programming and the process had to be repeated. This was almost every time I used the car. However, now the car seems to be healing itself somewhat in that I'd say 50+% of the time everything's working satisfactory, as opposed to 10% when I first got the car. Thing is, I have no real understanding of how this process works or what is not working properly. Anyone know what's going on here? TIA
