Radiator fan running when car is off
What good is a forum if I can't post the details of my issue. Have tried for a week to get a post to the Gen Tech section. I am going to try and post this and reply to my post to add the details of my issue...I apologize.
Sometimes they run for seconds and sometimes they run for minutes. When I turn the car on they immediately stop. When I turn the AC/Heat on they run (which is normal).
This happened two summers ago as well and I was unable to pinpoint the issue before it went away. I didn't discover it until my battery kept dying even after I had it replaced. The fans would run the battery down if I had the car parked for hours at a time. I came across it by luck when I walked out to my car in the morning after it sat there all weekend and the fans were running. I started unplugging the battery every time I knew I would be parked for more than a few hours. Fast forward to this summer and the issue is back from nowhere (although I am a little smarter now and am just taking out the fuse).
The relay is below your ecm. If water gets in, it can bypass the relay causing the fans to run. I would check that first, maybe take the relay apart and inspect it. The other option is the fan control module. If there is water in with your ecm, make sure to fix the leak.
Thanks Sethg10. I will take a look at that.
I did have a water issue in the ECM last summer. There was a leak and water and debris got in and corroded a lot of wires. My car wouldnt even start...$600 later they replaced and re-sealed all of that. So if water was getting in there it would make sense that it could have corroded the relay switch below the ECM over time as well. I guess corroded or shorted wires can do funny things (work fine for two years then show up again).
