replacing belt tensioner on an A6 quattro 2.7

replacing belt tensioner on an A6 quattro 2.7
I removed the bolt on the tensioner and got it free, but there is no room to bring it out the top. I have heard you can get to it through the wheel well... is this true? Or do I have to unbolt the fan, and if so, how do I do that? Thanks in advance...
