Spark knock?

Spark knock?
I have a 93 90s with intermitent spark knock. Usually when the engine is under heavy stress (3000rpms or climbing a hill). The plugs are newish (although they look like they have been dipped in ashes on the bottom but they are dry) I haven't changed the wires and I have been using 92 or higher octane fuel. So what do I need to do to fix the knock? thanks for the help.

RE: Spark knock?
if the wires are still original i would definitely do that. i don't know off the top of my head, but that car has a distributer right? I would assume so. Replace the cap and rotor too. the ash look on the plugs is carbon. commonly caused by a rich fuel condition or oil burning. Chances are its from a weak spark. Inspect the inside of the dist. cap. and the rotorif you see any corrosion on the terminal contacts or burn marks between the contacts replace it. If there is burn marks between the contacts your spark is jumping. this was very common on mkII andmkIII vw's with the 2.0. Hope that helps you. post a little more info after checkin it out. I'll help in any way I can.

RE: Spark knock?
Ok I have a 93 90s the engine has no cap it has a coil. I can't gap the plugs since they are already gapped from the manufacturer NGK. Any suggestions on a good plug? Someone told me NGK's and then bosch platnium 4's and I tried both and no difference at all but then again I know the wires have to be changed and maybe even the coil pack? I just want to get this car running great! I mean it does but without noises and creeks and what not it's a great running car and I plan on keeping it till it falls apart so I'm not concerened with spending money on it. Could it be that the plugs are to tight? My check engine light keeps coming on and goes off when I turn the car off and I believe the two are related. Thanks for all the help guys!
