Timing Belt @ 60K??

Timing Belt @ 60K??
I have a 2002 S4 and the dealership says the timing belt should be changed as part of the standard 60K maintenance. Since they have to open up the engine to get at it, they recommend doing the water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt etc. at the same time for about $1500! Does the timing belt really need changing at 60K and am I taking a big chance if I don't do it? Thanks....

I got my belt done at 75k.... which is recommended on the 1.8T. I think you could go for an extra 10k miles and then get it done, but I would definately advise getting it done in 5/10k miles.
If your timing belt snaps, your car is in serious trouble!

I took my new used A6 in for a tune-up and got the news I needed to change it all out - I was at 140K. Two months later I took the car in to have syntheitc oil put in for the winter and it started leaking at every seam. They said they recommend changing all the engine gaskets at 100K and that they'd have to pull the engine apart again to change all the gaskets.
Great Audi service! They love to pull the engine apart every 20K at the bargain price of $1500.

60k is most definitely the recommended interval for timing belts on all 1.8T, 2.8L, and 2.7T motors.
These are an interference design where a busted timing belt can result in thousands of dollars of damage.
On the 2.7T, the water pump is an integral pulley in the timing belt system, and MUST be changed at the same time as the timing belt.
We offer a full comprehensive timing belt kit which includes everything that's needed when performing the timing belt maintenance. All parts of the highest OEM quality available. All you need is some coolant, and you're set!

You could longer if you need to but right around 75k youll seriously want to consider changing it. Make sure you get all of the parts included in the pure full kit thou. They are all drivin by the timing belt and a failure in any of those componants will cause a timing belt failure. Theres absolutly no reason to pull an engine apart and replace all the gaskets on any vehicle. If its leaking replace it. Otherwise leave it alone.

According to the audi dealership it is due at 100k. It is part of the 100k inspection and maintenance. It is a rule of thumb to change the belt at 60 to 70k but NOT from audi! 1500 is a standard price but if you can find a highly recomended audi shop not associated with the dealership you should be able to get it done around $900-$1000. If your timing belt is warrentied for 100k and you change it now you will void th warrenty, for the new belt will carry a shelf life determined in years not miles. Good Luck!
