Default used or reconditioned engine

Hey guys,

I wanted to pick your brain on something.

If you have an engine failure on your car. Would you opt to replace it with a used engine or a reconditioned engine?

Either way, I wouldn't simply take a used engine and drop it in. At the least I would want to refresh all the seals and gaskets. It comes down to how much you can do yourself - if you can work on engines, I would source a used one, do all the seals etc, oil pump and pickup tube, and timing system with water pump and then drop it in. If you're not at that level of proficiency, I would buy one that's reconditioned and warrantied (or pay someone to do this on the used engine, with a warranty) and drop it in.
