Voltage question HELP!!!
What voltage should I be reading across the posts for the alternator with the ignition off, key out?
I'm getting, like 2 - 3 volts, MAX. This doesn't seem right, is it? |
RE: Voltage question HELP!!!
Are you serious? With the car not running you should not really get any voltage at the alt. There might be some residual voltage in it. Your only concern should be voltage with the car running.
The voltage regulator keeps the battery voltage out of the alt. |
RE: Voltage question HELP!!!
yeah, well, I'm tracing a COMPLETE electrical failure, at the moment. Started last weekend. Got in, put key in, all was normal. Turned key, everything dimmed. Not enough kick to turn the motor. Turned key off, tried again EVERYTHING went dark, INSTANTLY! Battery shows 12V (don't remember the current, but it's SPAKKIN'!!! pleenty of juice. NOTHIN works, tho. Started tracing line with my trusty multi-meter, thought I'd see what was showin at the alt, between 2-3 volts. Cant seem to figure out where the starter is (it's in a parkig lot, and it's been cold, and I still hafta go to work, so by the time I get home there is only a couple hours of light, waaaa-waaaaa-waaaaaaaaa).
So, any suggestions? D2 A8, in case you don't have EVERY members car menorized, LoL out loud... |

So, any suggestions? D2 A8, in case you don't have EVERY members car menorized, LoL out loud... Load test the battery. Put the meter on it when you are cranking, tell me that voltage is. Also put the meter on the battery, turn on the car (do not start) turn on all the stuff you can, tell me what the voltage is. Then turn it all off, & tell me how long it takes to get back at 12.5v. If everything doesn't turn on, or if it dims really bad, it's a bad battery. If nothing turns on, you might have blown the "fuseable link" in the car, or the battery is DOA. The ALT will have no affect on starting. You do need to make sure the starter is getting 12v. Other then that, I don't have much. Electrical problems suck! |
RE: Voltage question HELP!!!
There is NO corrosion an ANY of the battery terminals. 1st thing I checked.
Negligible "greening" around teh ground-strap. Barely noticible, really. Swapped in a brand new battery. No change to the symptoms. (After which I went and got my money back. Not feeling a $120.00 drop for a battery if it don't DO anything different than the one I had, which is showing the exact same voltage and current) Is there a fuse that covers EVERYTHING?!?!?!? Gonna hafta get my owners manual out and go fuse-by-fuse, AGAIN[:@] |
RE: Voltage question HELP!!!
Thinking, thinking...........
I don't have a freakin clue. Just remember A8's have allAL bodies. Also i don't know about the D2's but do they have the module that will power systems down if the battery voltage reaches a certain level? |
RE: Voltage question HELP!!!
Maybe the module itself has gone out, or ?????? I already Put a BRAND new batt in and -0-
|
RE: Voltage question HELP!!!
Its hard to say i have never seen a test procedure for the module. But have you scanned the car yet. Maybe you can figure something out then. Now one quick thing does any of the interior equipment work?
|
RE: Voltage question HELP!!!
NOTHING interior OR exterior works, or lights up. Not with the new battery or the old. It's as if a energy vampire has sucked the very essence of power out of the worings of the car, except the battery is fine.

RE: Voltage question HELP!!!
Nothing works......
Damn well so there is no power to circuit 30. Use your voltmeter go find one of the 50 fuse boxes in the A8. Now i am not sure about the D2 but under the kneebar there is a relay panel that has a terminal 30 marking. Check for power there, if no luck do a voltage drop from battery postive to its connection on the starter. Try to start the car see what your drop is. Now it has to be some kind of broken power supply, or broken ground. Now i have been reading up on the amperage control module and it doesn't cut power to the starter or engine management. Just to infotainment systems. Just do some voltage drops play around with it. See what kind of voltages are at some of the main systems at the fuse panels......... |
