What is B4, B5, B6, B7

What is B4, B5, B6, B7
I'm a newbie to Audis. I currently drive an e36 M3 and am considering purchasing a new S4. I'm wanting to learn a little bit more about Audis and so I've joined this forum. I've been looking at the S4 forum, but I'm not sure what a B4, B5, B6, and B7 Audi is. Can someone please explain?

I am by NO MEANS an expert...but I trust my sources...and someone told me that it has to do with chassis style...different chassis for different model years. The Bs are for the A4 Audis....the Cs are for the A6s...and Ds are for the A8s.
B5 is '96-01
B6 is '02-05
B7 is the new A4.
Okay...again...I am just learning myself...so don't quote me...but that is what I was told by someone who I would put on the expert level! :-P

b5 00-02 twin turbo 2.7l v6
b6 04-05.5 4.2l v8
b7 o5.5 + 4.2l v8
They switched to the b7 mid year in 05.

so sorry I’m dumb and new to my Audi so I just got 2015 Audi A4 2.0 so that means I’m b7 right ?
That is pretty much right. It is audi internal designation on body style. Just like there is an e36, e46 and e90 3 series bimmer, there is a b5, b6 and b7 style A4 series.
For the s4 the years are
b5 00-02 twin turbo 2.7l v6
b6 04-05.5 4.2l v8
b7 o5.5 + 4.2l v8
They switched to the b7 mid year in 05.
