CAI stock box mod, Help Please!
 

Hi all im new here and have a question and hope im posting this in the right place!

I have a 98 audi A3 AGU engine and k03 turbo.

I brought a CAI of ebay the other day and when I came to fit it I realized my stock airbox was different to most as it has what I belive to be called a ICM mounted on the top side of the box so I wasnt able to just swap out the box and connect the cai straight to the MAF. So I instead smoothed out the air box and noticed better throttle response.

My question is as I still have the cia kit, could I remove the pannel filter totaly, and run my CIA (cut down of course) to the bottom of the stock filter box I know it would take a bit of modding to the box and pipe, but I think this is a case of the best of both worlds as I would have a CIA and a stock airbox so there would be no chance of sucking water into the engine when going thru a big puddle say if I drilled a couple of extra drain holes.

Call it a sort of hybrid stock/CIA

Thoughts please!

Have yet to see it done that way but it could work. Gotta make sure that filter is safe from the elements though.

The B5 S4 guys seem to just drill holes or cut out a section on the bottom of their airbox and make some sort of pre-air filter screen for it.

I was thinking something like this, and yes I know its not an audi, but its the principle im looking into as I cannot fit A CIA due to my car having a ICM

why don't you just remove the ICM and mount it somewhere else?

Aint it mounted to the air box for a reason? because a piece of it sticks in to the airbox and can be seen from inside!

The first pic above is what im thinking of doing and the second is a pic of a ICM (not the one on my car) and thats the reason im thinking of doing this because its attached to my airbox on the outside and there is like a bit of metal like vanes on the inside of the box.

cold air is best for sure, not familiar with your car but on my 01 jetta i had a carbino intake in the fenderwell about 10" off the ground, built a cage around filter 1/4" screen, drove in pa winters and all 160,000 miles never any issues, also removing the maf screen and grid will add air flow also no issues for 160,000 miles
