audi concert modification

i have a 98 a4 with the concert radio/sound system and i want to put subs in without replacing the head unit. will aftermarket subs plug in without modifying anything or do i need to replace the whole system?

I recently added an amp and subs to my stock system. I purchased a Hi/Low Converter off of ebay because I could not find any locally. It was cheap, under $20. It gets spliced into your rear speakers and you plug your RCA cable from your amp to the Converter box. Simple installation and cheap. It will not sound quite as well without directly hooking up to an aftermarket reciever with RCA cables, but it is cheap, easy, and works well if you dont want to replace your stock digital radio.

I also used my factory symphony radio with a hi-lo output converter with a sub. Worked good but not as adjustable as with and aftermarket radio. Still i was clearing 144Db with stock radio 2 12 Crossfire BMF's and 1100 watt zapco amps. Am now running a aftermarket radio and am tempted at time to replace with the factory radio but i lost the code to activate it

Instead of using a loc, I spliced rca's into the line out connections on the back of the stock harness. There is a label on the top of the stock head unit that shows you which wires are the line outs. Works great, but you can't adjust the output pre-amp.

After using this setup for a few months, I am fed up. The sound is not what it could be at all. I am ready to purchase an aftermarket cd player so I can get the full potential of the subs and amp. Plus my stock radio is bugging me. The volume control will get a little wacky when I turn the volume up sometimes.

I'd wholeheartedly endorse you doing that, and ditch your speakers at the same time. I kept my OEM tweeters but replaced everything else (and ran new cable to the rear speakers), plus an amp and sub. Worlds better than stock. You won't regret it for an instant.
