I got it from a local independent shop, they found it in mass. You have to look for a shop and have them look for one or you can search for one, yourself. Just get the tranny code for your transmission,my was FAL its in your owners manual. Look for it there.

Thank's for reply. Ye, i'm one of those guys, who's taking care of his car, too. mine is a8 quatro, and did a lot of things to it including full engine tune up, suspension renewal, the interior is in great condition (it's 99), and it's got only 100,000 on it. it's just this crappy tranny, it went out without any symptoms. changed fluid, and it was alive, but then this 4th gear thing started.
btw the price you paid for trans replacement is great. Where did you get it replaced?

I was never told, what specifically was broken. I suspect 4th gear's tooth was broken,i didn't really care what was broken, just knew it needed to be dealt with. its not like anything is going to change,if you know which part failed.

The labor costs associated with rebuilding or replacing the tranny will be expensive(more if rebuilding) less if replacing. I got a used tranny with 70,000 miles on it for 1,000 and was charge 400.00 for installation and transmission fluid and filter ect...

The total came to 1,588.00 which isn't bad at all for replacing a 4 wheel drive transmission on a German car.

I paid 5,300.00 for Audina back in 2009,3 years ago with 147,000 miles on her,i just hit 170,000 miles and it was worth every penny,to pay to get her tranny replaced, being i paid such a premium for her and only cost me a fraction to get her fixed.

Depending on how much you paid for the car,if your willing to put money into it,just longs the price to fix it,doesn't exceed the cost you paid for the car. I was protecting my investment.

I'm so glad i didn't give up on Audina and just walk away, after being on this forum for over a year,i have read so many horror stories and seen so many owners of our B5's has sooooooo many issues and always are replacing something as something is always breaking.

I am the second owner, the original owner, took good care of Audina, she was always taken to the Audi Stealership. I have her maintenance records, that i requested my self, the dealership faxed me all her records.

I have had the rear main seal and oil housing seal leak and valve cover gasket leak(which is one of the most common things on our B5's) took care of them and just did the timing belt, water pump,t-stats and seals, changed the whole front suspension, both rear wheel bearing, changed all the vacuum lines with silicone, changed brakes and rotor all around, valve cover gasket, spark plugs, shocks all around.

My car drives and handles like she's brand new and its all because i take care of her, unlike most B5 owners on this site and other like it,i'm not into "modding" my care to make it faster and lowering it and all that jazz.

I like the B5's stock style, far as i am concerned,it doesn't need to be changed in any way,i like Audina, just the way she is stock.

Hi, just read your forum about the 4th gear tranny problem. Did you manage to figure out what the problem was? I have exactly the same thing with my tranny.

    Hi Morpheous,

You recently posted about a problem that your Audi had with 4th gear. You exactly described what my 2001 A4 1.8T is doing. Please tell me what you ultimately found to be your issue. I've been told its my transmission by the dealer, yet my family mechanic insists he thinks its an electrical problem. HELP!!!!
