This link is fairly helpful. Though I would like to think since you changed your thermostat that you flushed your coolant as well.
Also try blowing out your MAF with some canned air. Sometimes its something as simple as the fuel to air ratio becoming misconstrued since it is a power train code.

Thanks for the link. I found out there are 2 temp sensors on this car and the one i replaced doesnt control the temp gauge so i ordered the other one and will reply with results. I am going to try and flush the heater core. found some things online that say it could be clogged, but both hoses are getting hot when car is warmed up and heat on full blast. I did not flush the car when i replaced the tstat as it was replaced and flushed by a local shop within the last 1-2 years, my dad had it done.

Ok i finally got the new temp sensor that relays back to the gauge and the gauge is still not working, check engine light still on have not scanned it yet but will tomorrow. the temp light is still flashing when ignition on/ car off. no heat just blows cold air. car still has trouble starting too. any other help would be great. i will also try blowing out the maf sensor. car needs to pass emissions really soon.
also when i put the new sensor in i ran the car to let it warm up and felt the hoses, top rad hose was really hot, lower rad hose not hot at all, heater core hose in hot, heater core hose out slightly warm. the new temp senor i put in was very hot to the touch if that means anything.
